One of the most common questions we get is in regards to WordPress, and it’s site building abilities. WordPress is a CMS or Content Management System. WP is a very flexible system, and with plugins, can be turned from a traditional CMS into a full-fledged builder. Basically, the decision to use WordPress vs. Wix or one of the other platforms usually comes down to a few considerations:

A website for a photographer, vendor of onewheel shirts, or musician will usually require less than an eCommerce site. Therefore, you may focus on a landing page about your photography services and prices or your band’s upcoming shows. An eCommerce site may need multiple product categories, purchasing abilities, or intricate social capabilities. Given these points, you can avoid these time and cost requirements with a site builder.

Coding Abilities:
If this is your first website and you don’t have a lot of extra money set aside for developers and I.T., you are better off with a Wix, Weebly, or Sitebuilder platform. To clarify, these platforms are easy to use and don’t need any HTML or CSS knowledge. They also have teams of support people in place when you do have a challenge.

Costs Involved:
WordPress is free to install, and a lot of plugins are free as well. With WordPress, this is usually where the “Free” ends. In addition, you’ll find you have hosting needs, premium plugin costs, and most importantly time costs. This doesn’t include the finances to invest in developers, designers, or htaccess code tweakers. Because of the immense flexibility, WordPress is more overwhelming to start with.
In summary: WordPress is an awesome platform that can be tweaked to work like a traditional WYSIWYG builder. In short, it offers a lot of diversity in how the final product comes out. But, before you break out the credit card, if you aren’t an established brand, have friends as coders, or an excess supply of extra money to invest…a Website Builder is a much more practical place to start.
